SINGER Lauryn Hill doesn’t mind leaving her youngest daughter.

The star who is the mother of five children with Rohan Marley, the fourth son of reggae musician Bob Marley says she feels comfortable being away from her family. “I don’t know if you know this, but I have five children,” she said. “The youngest is 2 now, so she’s old enough that I can leave her for a period of time and know she’s going to be OK. That’s one reason I’m starting to perform again. “And I think it’s just time. I’m starting to get excited again. Believe it or not, I think what people are attracted to about me, if anything, is my passion. People got exposed to my passion through music and song first. I think  people might realize, you know, ‘We love the way she sounds, we love the music, but I think we just love how fearless she is. How boundless she is, when it comes to what she wants to do.’ And I think that can be  infectious.”

The former Fugees singer spent the majority of the 2000s not performing or recording any music or releasing many albums. The last studio album she recorded was her hugely-successful and critically-acclaimed The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in 1998, which featured the chart topping “Do Wop (That Thing).” Her live MTV Unplugged No. 2.0 album came out in 2002. Several months ago, Hill conducted a rare interview with NPR and said she is happy to be performing and making music again.“In fact, as musicians and artists, it's important we have an environment and I guess when I say environment, I really mean the [music] industry that really nurtures these gifts,” she said on NPR. “Oftentimes, the machine can overlook the need to take care of the people who produce the sounds that have a lot to do with the health and well-being of society, or at least some aspect of society.” She performed at a music festival in New Zealand earlier this year. Hill, 35, is set to perform at the Rock the Bells concert in Los Angeles, which starts on Aug. 21.

Interviews: Lauryn Hill & The Lover We Can’t Let Go

After a devastating breakup with a lover, some look for signs that he still cares. Despite the insistence of friends that he doesn’t, the wounded lover clings to every move he makes after the breakup—hoping secretly that the love connection lives on. “Ooo! He blinked twice,” the wounded will think to themselves. “That must mean he still loves me, and he’ll come back one day.” Hey. Maybe he will. Maybe he won’t. Such is the philosophy that defines our relationship with Lauryn Hill. Maybe she’ll return to us and we can access her like we did before. Or, maybe the single she leaked, and the concert at which she performed recently were all just a cruel tease. We hope so much that it’s the former (that Lauryn Hill is coming back), that we hawk her every move. Lauryn Hill - Repercussions • Sunny Choi - International Piano Artist

For example, according to MTV.com, “Lauryn Hill snuck back onto the Billboard charts for the first time in 10 years this week as the former Fugees singer’s“Repercussions” landed at #94 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.” See? She hasn’t even announced yet that she wants her fans back as much as they want her, nor has she officially released a single, an E.P. or L.P., yet fans are already putting her on Billboard. It’s fair to say, she’s captivated our entire generation that deeply with her music and she’s given us more love than any other hip-hop artist ever could–when she could. And even though she absconded from us, giving us not one studio album since our “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” love affair began, we’re more than willing to take her back. Are Lauryn Hill fans just a little too eager to pull her out of hiding? Should we be so easily convinced by any and every hint of her return?

This week, Lauryn Hill shocked the world by entering the Billboard charts after being in hiding for well over a decade.Hill’s track “Repercussions” leaked online several weeks ago, and this week debuted at #94 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart. While Top 100 status would seem like a joke for Hill in the '90s, nowadays it’s kinda like a big deal, considering Bin Laden seemed easier to locate than her. Lauryn Hill will make her grand appearance at the first date of Rock the Bells tomorrow in Los Angeles, where she will perform The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill in its entirety, almost 12 years to the day after its release (August 25, 1998).

While anticipating L-Boogie’s triumphant return, we can’t help but reminisce on other artists who have dropped off the radar. It’s never a good sign when their last appearance was on a cassette maxi single, but nonetheless we have some favorites we’d like to share. So get ready for a game we’d like to call, “Whatever happened to them?”
